Najib touts political change over snap polls

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 8 — Datuk Seri Najib Razak believes political transformation is more important than preparations for the 13th general election after meeting fellow Barisan Nasional (BN) lawmakers today.

The prime minister said the meeting was part of BN’s long-term aim of serving and placing the public first.

“This is a long-term process towards political transformation. To make each and every representative of BN more effective to serve the people, to serve the rakyat. The general election is part of the process but it is part of the long-term political transformation,” he told reporters at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) here where the meeting was held.

“We began our political transformation with amendments to Umno’s constitution, then we amended Barisan Nasional’s constitution and now my meeting with every member of Parliament. We did not meet with ministers because they have time to meet with me separately,” he added.

The Malaysian Insider reported last Saturday that Najib will meet all 136 BN lawmakers this weekend to gather feedback on holding early elections as coalition leaders appear to be divided on dates.

The 13th general election was at first expected to be in the first quarter of 2011 — over the March school holidays — but BN is seen to be reconsidering that until a slew of economic projects initiated start to boost the local economy.

Najib’s advisers are pressing for an early June date due to fears that a predicted slowdown of the global economy could affect the local economy in the third quarter.

The Malaysian Insider understands that Najib had earlier last month discussed with BN component leaders the possibility of holding the next general election in either May or June.

However, Najib confirmed that only 105 MPs were present and reiterated that the meeting was briefing BN MPs on the present situation in their constituencies, saying that this was a part of his political transformation effort.

“This is the actual purpose of our meeting because it based on our slogan to place the people first. So we must ensure that every BN lawmaker remains efficient. The BN MPs need support from both the federal and state governments to enable them to inform the government leadership of the people’s problems and how we can help to resolve them,” he said.

The Umno president added that the meeting was helpful for him to get accurate perspectives and information of each constituency under BN.

“In general, I am very satisfied with the reports by the MPs and this is part of our efforts to increase our efforts in solving the people’s problem,” he said.

Najib began meeting with lawmakers from Sarawak and Sabah earlier this morning with roundtable sessions between the BN chairman and secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.

Najib and Tengku Adnan meet three MPs at a time for 15 minutes to present the reports on their constituents that were submitted last week.

BN lost four more states and its two-thirds parliamentary majority in Election 2008, prompting then-Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to hand over to Najib in April 2009.
